hallow's eve

on the eve of it all
as we sit
way up here
on the cusp
of all the madness

and we watch
as all the streets below
filled with little children
all decked out
and ready to go

dressed up in their dreams
ballerinas superheroes
cowboys princesses
or their nightmares
vampires zombies
wolves ghosts...

all looking for little
bits of goodness
packed in shiny wrappers
given by neighbors...friends
as the season dictates

and parties take place
oh the many parties
with cider and cookies
and hay rides and bonfires
as we say goodbye to autumn
in grand style

and we usher in
the first peeps
of the chill of winter
soon we will be covered
in so much ice and snow

the limbs of the bare trees
will crackle in the wind
which whistles as it blows
forever colder
blinding us with the elements

then we will sleep
tucked way inside our little homes
a cozy fire to keep us warm
and to remind us once again
of the warmth of the sun

but not tonight
tonight is the last harrah
as we sing once more and dance
and make our many masked movements
marking yet another day
a magical progression
on the calendar of life.
