a boy, a dog, a summer day

i'm sitting here
at the edge of the creek
with my red dog Bones
looking down at myself
looking back up at me
in the crystal clear water
Bones sees herself too
and barks a bit
and then jumps in the creek
with a big ole splash
gets me kinda wet
but it feels good
it's awful hot here today

so i take off my shoes
and i stick my feet in the water
and i splash em around a bit
and watch all the colorful drops
fly way up into the air
and Bones, she's dogpaddling
in the water still
trying to catch her reflection
i call her stupid
and she barks
and i apologize

and i sit there
with my feet in the water
minnows nibbling on my toes
and i take out this
great big bottle of pink lemonade
from my knapsack
and i take a big swig
and i spill a little on my shirt
and i roll the lemonade
around in my mouth
a while before i swallow
through my teeth
under my tongue
hitting my tonsils
and then i gulp

and i whistle a bit
and Bones perks up her ears
as she makes her way to shore
and shakes herself off something fierce
getting water all over me of course
and i scratch her little head
and i call her a rascal
and she whines a bit
and licks me in the face
more water!

and i stand up in the water
and i look down into the clear creek
and i can see all the rocks
and all the little fishes
swimming around in circles
and the big blue and green
dragonflies are skimming
the surface of the water
perhaps for a little drink?
i don't know nothin bout no bugs
and i spin my arms around in the water
on either side of me
and i splash some up at Bones
who is now perched up on
the bank of the big ole creek
with a stick in her mouth
and she shakes her head and snorts

and i look up at the bright bright sun
and at all the robins flying overhead
and i smile and i sigh a bit
and i lift my arms up into the sky
and i fall back into the water
with a big splash
and Bones barks at me
and jumps into the water
on top of me
and we wrassle and splash
around for a bit
and then return to our places
on the riverbank
and Bones takes a drink
from the creek
and i take another swig
of pink lemonade
so sweet yet so sour
and i feel nice and cool
and so content
in my picture perfect
little world.

Awwww...you're sweet...

Thanks for the great comment. You know...when I first put this poem on here, somebody flagged it and I couldn't figure out why. Of all the poems people I wrote that could offend people, why this one? It's just about a boy and his dog!
Anyhoo...I enjoyed writing this one and I'm glad you liked it too!
Take care,
Mark

Glad I could help...

I was in a pretty summery mood when I wrote this. There's just so many fond memories in my head of Fourth of July's past when life was so much simpler and I had more hair!
Thank you for the great comment!

Mark

~Thanks for the Refreshment~

Mark,

Your poetic verse of the boy and the dog on a summer day was absolutely delightful! The scene played out in my head like an academy award winning film. I was there drinking lemonade and laughing at both of you.

Do you ever record your work? I think it would make a great treat...with nature sounds in the background.

Warm regards,

Kathy
