it would be nice to
think of you
when i think of you
as being somewhere
way up amongst the clouds
with huge white fluffy wings
and long golden blond hair
flying around your face
the face that lights
a million cities
and turns us all on
to what we can become
if we are only to believe
and in that special somewhere place
you would have a golden halo
that would shine over
all the heavens
and guide us to
a better understanding
of ourselves
of everything

but that's not practical, is it?
for the job of the angel
is not to be up looking down at us all
but to be here
among us
every day...in many forms
showing us in the here and now
the many kindnesses
that you hold in your heart
reminding us how real
heaven can be
right here
on our mundane little planet
taking your big magic wand
and drawing your own special
silver linings
on our gray little existence
and making things just a bit better
a little bit more worth it
a lot more spiritual

and you're everywhere
showing yourself
when we need you the most
in our darkest hours of despair
you take our little hands
and you walk us through
or carry us if the need be
and you whispurr to us softly
reminding us
again and again
that ultimately
no matter what
everything
yes everything is
going to be all right
you can kill many things
in the coldness
of the light of day
but you can't kill spirit
it always flows freely
among us all
all we have to do is breathe it in
and close our eyes
and slowly open them

and then we see them
the angels all around us
smiling at us
waving hello
opening doors for us
helping us to cross
the busy street
when we are weak
and no longer walk so well
making us laugh a little
in those moments
when it looks like
our worlds are falling apart
helping to dig us
out of the snow
or the heavy rains
of the rumblings
of the earth
and bringing us
just a tad closer to
understanding just what
eternity is all about

yes when i want to
look at an angel
i don't have to get
out my telescope
and look way up
into the cloudy sky
all that i have to do
is look at you.
