Punctuation

I sit and wonder,
How I want to be remembered,
When I pass away?
What would my headstone say?

Perhaps,
It will be simple, like,
"..............................
...............................
...............................
...............................
Man who loved silence…”

Or be strangely oxymoronic,
“Man of few words…
He was kind,
Warm, tender, loving,
Friendly, calm, cheerful,
Noble, dreamy, passionate… etc… ”

Will it bear my name?
“Eric…
And describe me as a hero?
…was a remarkable being…”
Or just another dead man?
… has died today…”

Will it start with a pronoun?
“He...
Then followed by some fine adverbs?
…was magnificently, tenderly and graciously…
And end it with a flattering adjective?
… affectionate…”

Will it have some punch?
“Eric was a firecracker…
And is exploding his way to heaven!”

A tragedy?
“Taken away too soon…
He will be dearly missed…”

Too detailed, maybe?
“Eric was born on October 16, 1984…
On a Monday… 4:15 in the morning…
Had brown eyes, black hair… and
The cutest button nose… a father...
A son, a friend, a lover...”

Melodramatic?
“Eric was a man, above all else…”

Will it be poetic?
“Roses aren’t as red…
The tides aren’t as graceful…
The sun has no reason to smile…
A poet has died…”

But, if I were to choose-

I choose to just be remembered-
With tears and laughters and not some words.
In some hearts and not on a stone.

Here’s one that
Might serve my headstone well,

“ . “

Brilliant

just brilliant, I've never read a poem like this before and I don't think I'll ever read another like it - it's meaningful and maturely written, and touches a subject most people don't normally think about. you're on a roll Eric! :D ♥

Jewel,

Thank you for the encouragement...
I'm happy you liked my humble inquiry...
Thanks thanks!

How will we be remembered?

I enjoyed this Eric, very thoughtful...I think something everyone ponders at some point.
This doesn't look at death with fear though, it's intelligent and humble. I also don't think we are remembered with words, but by how we made others feel, how we impacted their lives.
I have thought along these same lines, the only inscription I've ever found that I thought would be fitting, I found on a tombstone in a walled cemetery from the 1800's. It was a young woman's and it read simply "May your love always be a guiding light to heaven". It wasn't sorrowful, or remembering the past, but implied that she still loved them, that her love transcended even death, and that it would be a light to guide them when it was their time. This really makes the reader wonder as you, how will we be remembered. Well done.

Jill

Thank you for that wonderful reply...

and for taking the time to read this.
This thought came to me so suddenly yesterday...
I had to do multiple revisions of the ending... because I was so undecided and confused on how I want myself to be remembered...
Just goes to show, I still have a long life to live... we all do...
Right now, I'll keep the ending as it is... just a punctuation... a period...
Thank you again Jill! :)
