The Man Who Lived In A Pipe
I once loved a man
Who lived in a pipe
He slept all day
And smoked all night
When he was high
No one loved me more
But when he ran out
I got beat to the floor
One moment quite confident
The next miserably sad
He told me it was caused
By something quite bad
Unable to work
Unable to change
He damn near smoked
Himself insane
And I almost went with him
Trying to help
Wrecking my life
With my love on a shelf
I wanted to help him
To hold his hand
To show him it was okay
To again be a man
You can’t save someone
Who can no longer try
You’ll spend your days worrying
And in the nights you’ll cry
Eventually I got tired
Of him dragging me down
And one day without a word
I gave up and left town
There’d be no more I’m sorries
No more broken hearts
No more one more times
To try a new start
It tore me apart
To leave him that way
And down in my heart
I hope he gets help one day
Cause I understand the reasons
For what he did
We were both hurt deeply
By someone as kids
Sometimes you have to just walk away
Broken hearted
Tail between your legs
You live to love another day
Learn the reason
You let them into your heart
And once you heal
You’ll be ready for a new start
Once you’re whole you’ll find someone
Who’s strong and true
Someone who won’t make you
Feel bad about you

i was in a very same relationship, it was a bottle not a pipe, doesn't matter. we have to learn to " step over the bodies" if you know what i mean . you can't get or keep someone sober who doesn't want it for him or herself.
one day at a time

Thanks!
I've written poetry since I was a child. One of those simple pleasures in life I'm trying to return to. Good therapy, too. Glad to see my writing is well received. I'm hoping to stay with this and see improvements and diversity with each new poem. My goal is for the reader to be able to visualize and feel what I write. I'm sorry that in this case, it's more a memory that we have in common. Loving someone with an addiction is tough, but I'm finding it has it's purpose in helping us learn and grow in this journey we call life.
Peace & Blessings!
