Nightfall In The City

Nightfall in the City

A soft hum she never sleeps
As light fades and breezes once rustling leaves calmly slows
The sounds of children at play ceases
Only a few remaining voices from time to time are heard
The sound of many cars driving by
Now only a soft rumble in the distance
The moon begins her ascent
A round sphere of white not quite ready to illuminate
The last planes slowly fly across as distant shadows in the sky
The sound of their engines follows long after they have passed
Clouds vanish and doors close and lock
As the city prepares to sleep
Windows fill with lamp light telling a story by room and size
One by one they light and then go black
Skies now dark and filled with tiny white starlight
The moon now round and bright shows her lovely, ancient face
Aged with dark spots with soft glow round the edges
Yet the hum remains constant as night falls on the city
Hidden from all life continues
Inside each domain people will gather around square fluttering glow of color
Some will laugh and some will cry
Couples will argue and fight
Old and sick will surrender their souls
Addicts will feed habits
Children will bathe, read books and go to bed
Thieves will steal
Love will be made
Writers will write
Musicians will play
Pains will surge as births begins
Nothing truly stopping
Just cloaked by darkness and out of view
The city never truly sleeps, yet in her dark disguise for some she is rest
For others only a pause before the inevitable next day

I love this!

the way you wrote it about the night as a "she" and all the different things which go on at night.....not to mention the fantastic imagery and soft quality to it. love this one :D ♥

Urban Bedtime Story

A wonderful description of a night in the city, the sounds and lights, tangible in your writing, almost like one of those paintings of the town with all the buildings windows lit in yellow. The tone is soft and comforting, almost like a bedtime story...well done.
