The Day

All I heard was peace
as if all the world had ceased ,
adrift, without a fret,
time to take before sunset ,
so I walked river banks
feeding birds who offered thanks,
and drunk ale in ancient inns with
old soaks and wooden beams,
took in Georgian squares and lanes
watching ageing steam trains,
drinking tea with walnut cake
having fun on boating lakes,
I ate rare beef and crispy spuds
then soaked myself in warming suds,
Before laying down upon my bed
and thinking:
What have I achieved?
