The Queen and The Pawn
I hope I am not forgettable
I hope I am not replacable
I hope I am not a pawn on your
Very own chess table
I feel so belittled in front of you
My pride and confidence falling through
As I wait for the utter and uncovered truth.
The horse moves one left and two down
The knight smiles a wicked smile
The horse comes crashing down as
The rook slides gracefully to the right
Gives the knight a taste of its own medicine
Knocking it down to the unforgiving ground
The bishop wise at it is
Stays in its little square, observing as
The queen moves in to slowly collect her prize
When she stops and looks down into my eyes.
And says, "Oh little pawn, it is time
To make your move."
I stare at her stiff posture
When she hastily continues
"You are never going to get him
Because I am queen. He's never
Going to love you
Because he loves me already."
As my mind stays raised and strong
Never relaxes its hold, she says
"Oh little pawn, do you think you are
Truly a mighty queen?"
I spit through my
Clenched teeth, breaking into
Bits of tiny glass turned ash
" I am the one and only in this
Little black square
So I must be queen, only for exactly here."
In my dark depths I know the truth
As she pointedly walks
Towards them, towards him, away from me
Yesterday, I was the respected knight
Today, I am the belittled pawn
Tomorrow, off the board I will be gone.
