Lifelong Companions

For years now we've flown north and south
Keeping to the schedule of the seasons
Our wings have gradually grown weary
And it's harder to remember the reasons

Our children and grandchildren and their fuzzy goslings
I hope we have taught them well
Although in this life where we dwell is impermanent
There's something very important to tell

The fine example we have set for them
Is second nature to old hats like us
In the moments of youth maybe it isn't clear
Let's at last try to give them some focus

That no place we land is certain
Next year it may be out of reach
We will find another peaceful pond
I hope they learn what we have to teach

No matter what, though, we have each other
We rest together, our feathers softly comb
Enjoy the serenity, watch our family play
As long as we're together we'll always be at home
