The Ringing Phone

The phone rings
I know it’s you calling.
The hardest thing I could do;
Let it ring and not answer you.
With every call
That comes from you
I hope it will be the one where you say,
I want you back,
Let’s try to work it out.
But I know inside
I’ll be let down.
Your calls are not
To work things out
So when will I learn?
There is no hope within your voice
When you call it’s all business
And nothing else.
I let it ring and go to message
Trying not to seem desperate
By being at your beck and call.
But even your messages
String me along.
Not one detail is left,
You just want me to call.
How can I move forward with my life,
When you take away from me
The ability to decide
If why you are calling is so important
Or if it can ride?
I look at your pictures
And listen to your voice
Because it’s still not possible
To take you out of my life.
And it makes it all the harder
When you call,
It takes all my will,
To let it ring
From the other side of your wall.
