Indian Summer in the North End

Tiny shops lit up on a Sunday as sun sets,
those ambitious members of the working class
out for drinks the evening before the week begins.
Your knowledge of the backstreets
meets my suburban innocence.
And we stand on a bridge that connects
our history to our destination.

The time for fishing has not yet passed.
The fishermen still awake, their lines are cast.

Stones and steps don’t quite equate with
paved driveways, all alike in shape and size,
but Boston’s skyline stays visible
from the high points of my South Shore town.

The fishermen bring in their lines,
We pass by the “no wake zone” signs.

I smile because I can’t quite
put my finger on my current predicament.
Above water we stand—
Water with which we assume we are so familiar.
We take what we have for granted while
our youth, like summer in New England,
burns on.

Tale of two cities

An interesting poem, a meeting of the minds, two different people, two different worlds bridged together to share a moment in time and place. The imagery is great and very inspirational, well done!~Ron

Sara

Outstanding imagery and metaphor's. Like Ron K. said the bridge from a place in time you both have been to the uncertain tomorrows , water flowing underneath you both is time that waits for no man, (just water under the bridge) and what i thought was the best was the inclusion of fisherman. Like yourselves they are trying to take from the passing waters of time something of value. Yes Sara " Above water we stand" but not for long, we all must cross our bridge. thanks for sharing

The only time I look down on another is when I am bending to help them up.
