Past is Past

We shared tears from heaven connected on the same level
When we first met I felt a spark inside, incredible

The writing wasn’t on the wall we found it on the door
I understood why you did it the same reason I used to drink

So much more than I needed because my heart was bleeding
You patched it back up you were there to pick me up

After a night out at my house laid together on the couch
Nothing happened we just chatted but it made my heart melt

Keeping it a secret was killing me that’s why I had to leak it
Even if people would get hurt we knew it wouldn’t work

We knew it wouldn’t last too many people had an opinion
You brought hope to my life you lit up my dark world

If only for a moment every second was worth it
I can’t help what’s in my heart what I’ve felt from the start

You’re the only one I’ve sung to this is my “your song”
The one I loved and lost let slip the one I most regret

***********************************************
Chorus x2

The past is past so raise your glass don’t bypass the past
It made us who we are even if it left us scarred

There’s different side’s to me of course one of those sides was the cause
Of you leaving feelings diminished I couldn’t keep the anger in

Check, it wrecked any chance we had of staying intact
In fact a reality check I could have done without

Any way we live and learn I guess it wasn’t our turn
I had to get this off my chest I owe you at least

I refused to talk at the time well no surprise there!
I just wanted to say I loved you and wanted you to stay

But I knew you wouldn’t so I couldn’t accumulate the nerve to say it
I had to let you go it hurt but I lived to fight another day

The heart you patched up was torn apart once again
Its three years ago now and we`ve both moved on

This song is what I wanted to tell you all those years ago
I appreciate the time you gave the memories we made

I don’t let myself think of you sometimes you creep through
In a dream or when a song plays in the background reminding me of you

***********************************************
Chorus x2

The past is past so raise your glass don’t bypass the past
It made us who we are even if it left us scarred

***********************************************
At my Dads wedding you wrote my speech because I couldn’t
Word for word what I would have said like you were still a part of me

Like we were still intertwined somehow minds still aligned
It brought a tear to my eye I felt that feeling inside

I didn’t say but I nearly fell in love again
But I wouldn’t let myself though it was what I wanted most

I couldn’t go through that again I couldn’t deal with pain
So I let the feelings spill out onto my pad from my pen

Again, that test in Brook Street had me unable to speak
We both felt it both saw what might have been but wasn’t

I should have said things I didn’t I told friends I didn’t care
On my own all I was felt was despair you weren’t there

The bottom of a bottle didn’t bring me anything but trouble
That’s partly why I lost you in a way your my AA

I want to say thank you I’m sorry if I ever hurt you
For the love you brought into my life I’ll be eternally grateful
