Summer Camp (JN)

The end of camp is coming soon,
Hope you got to gaze at the moon.

Flying blood suckers, buzzing blood eaters,
Did you get bitten by pesky moskeeters?

Did you see turtles, or did you see bears?
Did you see snakes curled up in their lairs?

Did you see skunks sitting or laying?
Did you get shot by their smelly spraying?

Did you climb up cliffs or any big rocks?
Did snakes or frogs get in your socks?

Did you get scared though you’re very tough?
Did you fill pockets with interesting stuff?

Did you eat crickets, lizard guts did you fry?
Or Green Toad cake, or Western Box Turtle pie?

Enough about good things to cook and to eat,
Did the boots I gave you feel good on your feet?

Hope snakes kept away while you slept in your place,
Nothing scarier than waking with a snake in your face.

My snake book tells me, there are only one or two,
Snakes that would turn you, from pink to black and blue.

The rattle snake is one that will spell doom,
Unless you get to the emergency room.

If you hear the sound of a rattle in the sand,
And no baby nearby with a rattle in her hand,

Walk quickly and without meditating,
In the opposite direction without hesitating.

Hope you didn't forget, sun screen to apply,
Else top layers of skin turn red and then die.

You’d live on but your skin be pealing,
Tingle of fried skin you’d then be feeling.

Enough about heat and skin red and sore,
Do you like camping, do want it some more?

I hope you slept well and warm in the night,
While one thousands frogs croaked in spite.

I hope you met a good friend or three or eight.
Writing them letters from home would be great.

“Write in your journal” keeps saying your dad.
By saving your memories, you’ll be glad.

If I could fly there on my magical rug,
I’d pick you up now and give you a hug.
