Through Eternity's Acres

Wind rustling through eternity's acres
In a pastel land of green and shade
Spirits of the woods on quiet paths
Move with the breeze, into dark recesses
Above a damp floor of leaves, this windy oracle,
Oblivious to time's tyranny,
Pulls me further into depths of verdant silence
Its grey lichens on bark and lengthening shade
This desolateness,
Soon to be conquered by advancing dusk, like a wave
The whippoorwill and robin birdsongs,
Heralding advancing shadows
Silence leading me to deeper paths of dusk
Past weathered gravestones, crumbling in dissolution
Now, the delicacy of ferns
Catching the brilliant glow of dying sunlight
Emerald green diffuse across this ancient path.

Thanks, Raskin!

What inspired me was my walk through the Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in Sharon, MA. It's a beautiful place that I have been going to since I was young. And it never fails to inspire me. Thanks for your kind words.

fantastic

NF, the scenes you paint with words are amazing. Great description and journey into the woods and such good language as well.

I was glad to see Raskin also comment on this piece. You and she write some of the best nature stuff this site has to offer. Check out her blog if you haven't done so already and thanks for sharing another lovely piece with us. It's always nice to read you.

Thank you, Neocon!

I much appreciate your comments, Neocon. I go for nature poems, because inspiration flows so freely when I'm in the forest. If you want to read a writer's works who went out of his way to immerse himself in nature, it would be Thoreau. He lived in a small cabin in the forest for years and penned the masterpiece 'Civil Disobedience' or 'Walden Pond' (not sure what the title is). I studied his works in college and he is one of my favorite 19th century writers. I'm sure you're familiar with his works.

yes, Thoreau

I enjoyed reading him as well as Robert Frost. I like the contemplation nature provides me. Nice work nightflyer. raskin

Throeau

Yes, I've read "Walden Pond" and even went to, and swam in, Walden Pond as well as visited his cabin. I like your taste in (and knowledge of) literature, NF!
