We'll Nail Him to the Throne
We'll take an ax to the cross
as he lies in his tomb
awaiting his awakening.
We will send it crashing to the earth
with a few well aimed blows.
We will get our own carpenter.
One we can trust to do as he's told.
He will take the dead man's saw and plane
and fashion a throne
from the bloody tree.
We will gild it with gold
and fashion feet of silver.
We will encrust it with diamonds
and pearls and all manner of things
foreign to him.
And when he comes out
we will lay violent hands upon him
before he can do any more damage
with all of that talk of love
and forgiveness and such.
We will make him
our Lord and King and Judge
whether he likes it or not.
We will not take no
for an answer.
We will use the spikes
which we pried from the wood,
and fit them carefully
into the holes that remain
in his hands and feet.
With his own hammer
we will nail him to
his wooden throne
made from the wooden cross
on which he died.
Nailed to his throne of wood
he will cause less trouble
and be less likely to become lost
in the wide world, or to wander
into places where he is not wanted.
It is so much easier
to live with a King
than with a crazy brother
who wanders about
scattering miracles like seed.

I must say
this is pointedly irreverent. My nephew, who was three at the time went to mass with us and he said after the presentation of the host and the wine, "do you mean we're sposed to drink the blood and eat the body!" He was totally appalled and he was right on. raskin
