French Chick
We'll deport that French chick who still stands by the bay
a holdin' that lantern and lightin' the way
for all of those peasants who came here to stay.
She's worn out her welcome, let's send her away.
We'll take down her torch and set up a big camera
that sees from the island down to Alabamera.
We'll print all our kids and scan every retina.
Without your ID our cops will be gettin' ya.
The kids who came here when they were just three
will be booted right out of the land of the free.
Your tired, your hungry, your poor we're rejectin'.
Engineers and your doctors are what we're acceptin'.
The others can come if in line they do stand
for years upon years way on down in their lands.
As bureaucrats twiddle their thumbs and take naps,
the hopleless cross deserts without any maps.
This land it is ours, you cannot come here
because xenophobia's stylish this year.
Hatred and bigotry leap from our throat,
just like when Great Grandaddy jumped off the boat.
But he worked and he slaved at all jobs he could find,
he worked in a factory and dug in a mine.
To him this great land flowed with milk and honey
though he was despised and his accent was funny.
Now his great grand children all look down their nose
at men who like him are a'trudgin' the roads
to seek a new life, just like back in the past.
Great Granddaddy would kick his dumb kids in the @$$
for doin' to these what was once done to him.
But they're tough, they can take more than one on the chin.
I hope their grand children are better than we,
and prove willing to share this great land of the free.
So I think we should light Lady Liberty's torch,
for if we do not we will feel much remorse.
Those who built this great land were the refuse of shores.
But in their sweet faces we're slammin' the doors.

I suppose
the government thinks we have enough garbage in our country, anyone with indigenous heritage shakes their head at the whole argument. We the conquered but that's another argument. I think within the history of this country it is always an argument but people come here and work hard, end up contributing a lot. My family is immigrants and also native. I like the thought provoking poems it's interesting to read. I think in this country this is a timeless topic. Personally I think it is the whole us versus them mentality, but at one point all of us is "them". raskin
Once again, we agree
I have also never gotten the "us vs. them" thing
To me, the great thing about America is that we are all "us". One becomes an American by deciding to be one, regardless of past personal history.
Good to see you back,
Good to see you back, McMongrel. It's quite hypocritical, the whole anti-immigration thing. The only people in America with a right to complain are the Natives whose land was stolen. If anyone should be complaining about all these damn "fererners" it should be them. Nice piece. NSF
Thanks for the words. For
Thanks for the words.
For the past several months I have been battling some rabid anti-immigration folks in blogland here in my town in N.C.
These guys are not just reasoanable people with some concerns, but racists who refer to Mexicans as "termites" and "intestinal parasites", and have callled me a traitor.
I really need this poetry site so I can get some friendly feedback, even though everyone might not agree with my stand on the issue. At least here we try to be respectful of each other.
Its hard to be a poet and be closeminded.
