Soldier's Lament

As a soldier heads on off to war'
his thoughts begin to wander.
As a thousand things go through his head,
and life he tries to ponder.
The road ahead,the road behind,
the enemy all around.
As bullets hit and bombs explode,
and his buddies hit the ground.
Will he live to fight another day,
will his death be swift and painless?
Will they ship him home in a metal box,
his uniform clean and stainless?
Or will he only be disfigured,
lose a limb or perhaps his sight?
Or be merely tortured by what he's seen'
through the long and fearful nights.
And what of his family back home,
as he arrives on a distant shore.
Will they ever truely understand,
why he had to walk out the door.
Remember your children America,
and the sacrifices they have made.
The selfless service, the fight for right,
and the price that they have paid.
