Surpassing Expectations

Behold the tattered remnants
Of a past where no one cared,
A past that built the future
From warfare and man’s despair.
Now can we overcome it?
Can we build tomorrow new?
Make the future livable
With no recompense left due.

If churches preached the good word
And ignored the dollar sign,
If leaders of the free world
Didn’t start wars all the time,
If all nationalities
Were combined as just mankind,
If corporations gave back
To this world before it dies.

Then perhaps we could survive
And maybe even prosper,
All we really need to do
Is what we know is proper.
We’ll have reason to be proud
Surpassing expectations,
We just have to nurture life
And care for all creation.
