SUMMER DAZE

“Summer Daze”
© Linda R. O'Connell

A bumblebee frantic in a hole poked jar
one cut up knee
and the other one scarred
kids slurping up popsicles with sticky hands
never ending days of lemonade stands
hammocks slightly swinging in the balmy breeze
“look ma, no hands”, down the hill with ease
red white and blue parades of marching bands
stubbed big toes and sun bleached strands
peanut butter and jelly and “dress up” clothes
laughing so hard milk came out our nose
fresh cut grass every three days
hopscotch and jump ropes, a tangling maze
inhaling baseball cards that smell like bubble gum
blueberry stained fingers and perfectly ripened plums
flashlight tag, simon says... red rover, red rover
lying in a freshly scented bed of sweet clover
emerging suntanned, teenaged lovers
shy, first kisses... remembering summer......

summer

Aww, Linda, what a cute poem. Reminds me of summers as a kid. It's my favorite time of year and is probably why I like Florida so much. Good write.

Thank you Neo!

I love summer. it's so....everything!!!

childhood and summer memories...

Linda, this brings back so many memories for me, some of them I would like to forget, lol. I was in the third grade and me and my friends like to jump ramps on our bikes and I was the first to test a new bigger ramp we built, we live on a dead end paved road and I lived in the next to last house, with no ditch in the front yard. So we always put the ramp in my yard, figuring if we crashed it would be better in the yard. Well the jump went fine and the landing would have too except the momentum caused my feet to slip of the pedals and, of course I landed on that bar... I kinda lost track of where I was after that but managed to keep the bike on both wheels long enough to hit my mom's car, ugh. Then I just remember fallen to the ground in slow motion, oh man that was painful.... Having shared this... THANKS LINDA! FOR THIS POST... I had completely forgot about this until....now, lol. You know I am just giving you a hard time, A lot of my childhood memories didn't involve pain, you just have to keep in mind my childhood perspective... I grew up as a boy, Thanks for the post, later-Lee

OUCH!!!!

wow, Lee, you sure do sound like a boy...i have two boys and i loved how they played like that...a great day was when they came home with bloody knees and dirt all over their bodies. thats when i knew they had fun!
Thank you lee for reading this and sharing your memories with me...that ramp sounds awesome !!! My kids did the same things with ramps and their bikes..(always made me so nervous...) but i allowed them to do it anyways....lol
glad you like this one Lee
