Fifteen Still

FIFTEEN STILL
By Linda r. o’connell

Back in the day, I heard him say
Explaining to me in that old cliché
But I still feel young, I swear I'm the same
Who’s playing this joke, who is to blame?

Why does nature have to take it’s course?
I have no regrets and feel no remorse
So why can’t I still look as young as I feel
This aging thing, seems like such a raw deal

I know getting old is just a state of mind
You can still do anything if you are so inclined
When I look in the mirror my imperfections aren’t there
But when a picture is taken it becomes so aware.

Don’t they say that thirty, it is the new twenty?
Pretty soon there will be one wrinkle too plenty
But getting old is all relative, compared to what?
It's better than the alternative is it not?

For sure on the inside we’re all fifteen still
There are so many things that still give me a thrill……
Don’t think im not watching as you walk on by
I still think you’re hot I cannot deny....

How old would you be if you didn’t know your age?
Those are wise words, from the great Satchel Paige
Everyone is only the age of their heart
You’ll remember that always if you are smart.

Youth would be an ideal state if it came later in life
I’m not sure if any one of us asked for such strife
It’s sad to grow old but so nice to be wise
When I look in the mirror I'm still fifteen “in my eyes”

terrific write, Linda

This is one of your best, Linda. I can identify with every word and it sounds really great. Thanks.

Joyce

thanks joyce

thank you so much joyce, this was inspired by a lady in her eighties who said, as she was sitting in an assisted living home......"You know, we are all still fifteen inside...i look at the man walking by and i still think...he's a hottie"
I love it , dont you?
i appreciate your comments Joyce , thanks again
Linda

Very Well Done My Friend

A lot of us would like to pause it on fifteen and just stay there i bet. I used to be scared of growing old when i was a child, but now i look at it in a brighter light and i've come to accept it. ~~ B.E.Coast

--A very well written poem Linda((all of them are)) but i really like this 1 and 'The Ordinary Day'....

Bryce

Thanks Bryce, You dont know how much that means to me coming from you. ( and i say that as a huge compliment to someone so much younger than i am) goes to show you... age doesnt make a difference at all..... because i respect you so much, knowing you only, through your writng...and makes me realize you can see the real person through their writes...thier heart.
ps, "the ordinarty day" was my first attemp at poetry and so dear to my heart.
thanks Bryce!

Great

Even though im not that much older than 15 I can understand what you mean, I remember watching a dvd about an elderly woman who was in a nursing home and she wrote one of the most beautiful poems about being old but not feeling old and how all she wished for was to be recognised as the person inside of her. Your poem is fantastic and it really brings up the point that even though we may be all different ages on the outside we are all pretty similar in the inside. Sorry for the rant, i really enjoyed the poem.

Rosie

Rosie...

Rosie, you are such a smart kid! I wish i knew what movie that was, i'd like to watch it.
it is so true though about us all being the same age still on the inside and for you to recognize it at such a young age is amazing.
thanks for your comment rosie, i appreciate it so much!

Thankyou

Thankyou for the allways welcome compliments lol The dvd was part of a training exercise for nursing homes in the UK it was to help make aware to employes that even though the residents may need help you should never forget peoples pride and feelings. My mum showed it to me and i found it very inspirational. I really do enjoy reading your poems, im envious of that fact you are so good at portraying your emotions and feelings lol its a talent that would love to posses.

Many thanks Rosie

rosie,

i wish i had discovered i could write back when i was your age. i didnt start writing until about 6 months ago. i wrote that poem of mine called "I loved YOU" and the "ordinary day" and it all opened up from there...like just jumped out of my heart on to the paper...its been enlightening forr me to say the least!
thansk for all your kind words also rosie.

I'm 59 going on 12

Linda,

I could really relate to this piece because I have experienced it over and over. I totally refuse to let the wide eyed child inside of me grow old. Sure the aches and pains have multiplied but my sense of wonderment and joy shall not abate.

Luv ya,

Pete

Linda

its a great write, found my self chuckling reading the third stanza...

great poem Linda

Great poem Linda growing old is a process we all have to go through some accept it and others can`t,the ones that can will have a much happier old age and the ones that can`t. are the opposite,
all you have to remember is that "you are as young as the man that you feel" lol hugs from Willow
