Happily Ever After

"It's our song", she says,
As he leads her onto the floor for a dance.
They remember when they fell in love
And fell again into that same trance.

"And they lived happily ever after",
The mother said to her child in bed.
The child dreamt of princesses and magic
And sugar-plum fairies danced in her head.

"Catch me if you can!" a child screamed
Escaping into trees for his friend to find him.
They chased and played and teased
Then cooled off with a refreshing swim.

We read and watch stories like these,
To escape to a world so opposite from yours and mine.
So what about you, will you be my valentine?
Will you give me some of your precious time
To read me books with magic and rhyme?
Will you come and play with me
Like it so often says in the books?
Well, you know what,
Life isn't nearly as good as it looks.

Life is songs of self-hate,
Stories of ill-fate
Reminices of rape,
Forgetting our mistakes.

This is what life is really like-
It's nothing more than God's prank.
And if you are able to disagree with me
Then it looks like you have a loved one to thank.
