Three Ships of the Desert

Silently their ships moved
In a rhythm with the night
Camel bells from the east
Stepping through the light

A strongbox of gold glistened
Against a moon of beams
A gift for the Son of God
Foretold in prophet’s dreams

Silently they moved with stars
A journey far from other lands
Moving with the eastern winds
Their destiny in God’s hands

An alabaster flask of myrrh
The oils of a fragrant death
In the time of King Herod
For Divinity born into flesh

Silently they moved in truth
A star of Bethlehem to guide them
Their journey charted in the heavens
And the dreams of God inside them

Frankincense tears from sacred trees
Journeyed with the wise men’s fare
A proclamation of Christ’s holy birth
Rising up in clouds of incensed prayers

Silently they passed, descendants of Kings
To join God in the presence of earthly things
Arriving into the Light of Mother and Child
They set up their tents to worship for awhile

Kneeling in soft hay, they pronounced His holy name
Wise men of God’s dreams celebrating why Jesus came
A star in the East recorded this message of glory
This is the beginning of our Christmas story
