What Happened Yesterday

I went out early and saw the sunrise
Dive on the breast of a mountain,
Then the drifting fog recited
Passages from Joyce

I ground those words into tiny flakes
And smoked them all afternoon,
Finally succumbed and floated up--
Way up--like a balloon

From the clouds, I watched the villiage
Yield to the darkness
(Oh! How slight was her resistance
To his suave advances)

When I woke, dawn filled the sky
Outrageous in the east!
Nighttime left my roof and lawn
And crept off like a beast

I was fixing the flowers
When blue-eyed morning
Stopped and came inside...
We visited over coffee
Until the dew had dried.
