Killing Frost
Tonight's the night of the killing frost,
You flowers all, my loves, will be lost;
While stars shine bright in the clear, cold sky,
You will freeze like ice, then droop and die.
Good-bye Zinnias
I will miss your friendship
And your colors grand
When snow is piled deep
And cold
On the spot where you now stand.
Good-bye Marigolds,
Running along the garden,
A golden fringe,
Constant through the summer,
You made me feel rich.
When sleet and freezing rain come down,
Its you I will remember.
Good-bye Petunias,
Bright in brick planters
Joys of my heart.
I will imagine you
On cold, gray days,
When afternoons are dark.
Good-bye Sunflowers
Tall, trusting and benevolent
Leaning over the fence.
Our conversations, to me, made sense.
I will think of you often
When snow drifts up in your place,
High, unkind and dense.
Good-bye Morning Glories
Weaving through the lattice by the shed
Opening at sunrise...
How I loved you then!
Tomorrow, you will be dead.
On frigid winter mornings,
I'll wish for you instead.
Good-bye Cleomes, my favorites.
I started you from seed in March
Indoors in pots of peat,
Watched you grow up tall and beautiful
And loved you like my children.
How it makes me sigh and grieve
Imagining you gone...
How my heart will yearn for you
As winter drags along.
And so our summer ends.
Next year's flowers will no be you,
My friends.
Its chilly, and I must go in...
Good-bye...
Good-bye...
Good-bye...
