The Little Things
It’s the little things that make up who we are
the subtle habits that we never notice in ourselves
the behaviors that only those who care for us see
bouncing leg, fixing hear already perfect, stroking of book pages…
these are the intimacies, the little things that bind.
What is it that causes connections?
what magnetism brings people together and allows walls to be lowered
giving a glimpse into the depth behind the public facade
the growth of friendships and the basis of caring
turning those you hardly know into those you will never forget
When those close to us have to move on
it’s the little things we are left with
the memories of conversations and debates,
shared laughs and shared troubles, the vulnerabilities…
the interactions and the quiet comfort of companionship
It’s the little things that bond!
a warmness of spirit that allows for and welcomes quiet
reading another’s needs and placing them before your own
these are the little things we do without notice
without care, without conditions!
And when parting is required, and it’s time to move on
know that you leave something special with those that are true
regrets are softened and melt away without tears
memories continue and keep us warm and fill us with hope
it’s the little things that give us smiles – together or apart!

So Thoughful
It"s funny the things others notice about us, sometimes it's things that even we ourselves are not aware of. Well written and very thoughtful. I tend to remember the way people smile and the way they laugh, silly phrases or words they say that are unique to them. I think with true friendship you give a part of yourself and that is what is left behind, along with the small remembrances. This poem made me smile, thanks!
Thanks for your comments.
This poem sort of got my creative juices flowing again. I find the thought of saying good byes very difficult, and picking up the pen again has been a great outlet.
Have a great day!
