How to Liven Up a Train Journey
On a train
This is so boring,
A three-and-a-half hour journey...
No wonder I'm yawning.
Sitting still
Looking out of the window,
Animals, buildings, fields, just a blur as we speed by
Safe in this metal tube
All systems go.
There's nothing to do,
I scratch my head...
I've read my book,
Enough's been said.
I've listened to my music,
I've fiddled some more,
I've written a rhyme,
I've been told to shut up,
Honestly, you'd think that whistling incessantly
Was against the law.
I cross my legs,
I curl my toes,
I stretch my arms
My heavy sigh steaming up the windows.
I then hear the sound
Of gentle snoring
And I sneak a glance at you, asleep,
You're off zzzzzzzing ever so deep
I smile and suddenly the journey's
Now not so boring...
I give you a quick prod
You don't move an inch,
You really are sound asleep
My grin's now as big
As the one of the Grinch.
I rummage in my bag
For my permanent marker pen,
I unscrew the top
And play my fatal trick again...
“Well that was a lovely few hours
Don't you think?”
You say as you stretch,
“Oh, have I had a snooze...
I'd better go and sort out my hair
So I don't look too much of a mess.”
You walk off, totally unaware
Of the looks you're getting,
The befuddled stares.
I try and suppress my recognisable cackle
Though I can't help sniggering to myself,
Omigod, when you look in the mirror,
I'm going to have to leg it
Either that or get some serious help.
I wait quietly
Slowly counting one, two, three....
And right on the dot
Maybe a split second later because of the shock,
You bellow enough to send all the birds flying
Away from their perch on the trees
And definitely enough to make laughter explode
Right out of me...!
“Jesus Christ,
What have you done?!
I look a complete fool,
How dare you,
Get back here,
For God's sake Jewel!”

Total abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself.
