Don't Judge a Book By it's Cover
Just because I wear a hoodie
Doesn't mean I carry a knife,
Just because I'm sixteen
Doesn't mean I want to take away a life
Or make people scream.
The expression you need for young people
Is “don't judge a book by its cover”
That applies to so many of us
More than any other.
Reputation sticks like glue
When you see rough press on youngsters like me,
Whenever you clap eyes on thee
You automatically think that all the bad things are true.
Just because I go round with my mates
Doesn't mean we're in a gang,
Just because we're sometimes out after late,
Doesn't mean we've got illegal things that go bang.
Just because I shop on the streets
Doesn't mean I want to beat the crap out of everyone I meet,
Just because I'm in the dark
Doesn't mean I want to creep up on you
And give you a start.
Just because I laugh and joke,
Doesn't mean I drink or smoke,
Just because I'm having a good time
Doesn't mean I do drugs or go out to commit crimes.
Just because we like to look cool
Doesn't mean we skip school,
Just because I dye my hair
Doesn't mean that I scare or swear,
Just because I'm my own person
Doesn't mean I cause vandalism
Or have been in prison.
Just because I'm in a mood
Doesn't mean I've got a mean attitude,
Just because some of us are misunderstood
Doesn't mean that the rest of us aren't fine and good,
Just because some of us don't care about others
Doesn't mean we're all like that
We actually are kind
Not crazy and demented
No better than a rat.
We're not all hooligans,
Unruly lunatics
We don't all carry guns
And break windows with bricks.
Some of us are actually OK
Ordinary children who just want to have their say,
But because of how we look
Means you don't want to know,
You should think of the saying about the book
And not tell us to go.
Try and think about what's underneath
Have a little faith,
Have some more belief.
So next time you see a teenager,
Don't run and hide,
Don't feel scared or apprehensive
Instead smile and look us in the eyes.
Next time you see us
Don't immediately think the worse,
Don't judge us on our clothes,
Or whatever else shows,
Try and take a good look,
Don't see a young delinquent, please,
And instead see
Just a normal person,
A person just like me.

Nice poem, JewelPhoenix. I
Nice poem, JewelPhoenix. I blame the BBC and SkyNews, Dailymail, etc. for trying to freak out the pensioners into thinking all kids in the UK are yobs and dumbasses. While there are many that certainly are (where is Mary Poppins when you need her?) the majority aren't out causing trouble. I love the message and statement this makes. And if you are actually 16, I must say that I'm surprised you are so young, because the wrtitings of yours I've read have a maturity to them that is not usually seen from someone that age. Keep up the good work. Peace, NSF
Thank you
I know, I'm not saying that everyone single young person is normal, some can be seriously rough (putting it mildly) but we're not all going to go and randomly terrorise other people, though you feel like doing it at times because of the way others treat you. I am 16 (only 2 years away from being an adult-help!), I really appreciate you saying that, I love writing, I feel I connect to it more than anything else, so for you to say that is really something, thank you ♥
fair play Jewel,
good on ya for standing up for urself and speaking ur mind...ive just turned 22 and I cant believe how much society has changed since I was a young teen, but do u know who I blame......media! I remember, on my street the youths had safe places to go and meet, to hang out, u would see 4 yr olds on the street playing with fellow friends etc......but now, even at 22, I would not leave my house alone in the area I live in, dunno if u know it, Moss side, Manchester ........nasty place, however, I dont blame the youths, I blame government and media, never mind though, from ur thought provoking write, it just goes to show how clever and thoughtful youths can be, your doing good for your fellow teenagers, keep up the good work and keep spreading the message!
peace
Thanks
It is everything you read in the papers, see on the news or hear on the radio, it's like that saying "give a dog a bad name and hang him" just because a handful of teenagers do bad stuff, doesn't mean we all do. I've heard of Moss side, but haven't been there, you look after yourself round there though. Thank you repenter86 ♥

This caught my eye
and it's all about acceptance. This is one thing, a boundary as it were, like predjustice and hate that we all have to overcome. we were all made different, for a reason. Imagine 20 billion clones running around, a human ant farm, everyone saying and doing the same things, looking exactly alike. Boring place I would imagine. I like the points you bring out here. More people should be this aware. I'm leaving a little piece I wrote years ago about acceptance, in a sense, letting you know, it's ok to cross the line!~Ron

surrounded by a world of
colors, places and things
people, as well
are also different
styles, attitudes, beliefs and
colors
attribute to the makeup of
the world’s population
making us all
individuals
some stay with their own
their click or group
their church or color
schoolmates, scholars
writers, artists, scientists, magicians
the list is endless
people with similar interests
making their own pack
some have a tendency to
stay with their own
no matter what
feeling more secure being around
those of like natures,
styles or color
but
there are those of us who
jump the boundaries
going where few dare to tread
crossing the forbidden line
to learn, to live, to love
to understand
sometimes
feeling like a broken puzzle piece
wanting to be accepted
fitting in exactly, no where
is a challenge
comfortable
in many circumstances
going with the flow
only for the opportunity to
make a friend
seemingly risky, at times even
dangerous, yet
a learning experience
“seek and yea shall find”

Thank you for reading, I posted it a while ago so didn't expect any more comments, but I'm glad you posted your thoughts Ron :)
It would be unbelievably boring if we were all the same, same appearance, same personality, same everything...urg! Everyone needs individuality, though everywhere you go, schools, work, ect, are trying to stamp it out of you-however, for me at least, it just makes me rebel all the more!
It's a cool poem you wrote, "Enter the Chameleon", true in every sense, you portray that to a tea-I love each verse, you hit the paragraphs at the right time to make you think :) ♥
