1914

The forgotten past
Of 1914,
My memories transporting me back
I remember the scene...
A little girl
Ten was I
The war was here
Planes like metal birds did fly,
As bombs began to drop
Like huge acorns from the sky
I didn't know
If they would ever stop.
I remember my cat
Going splat,
Not standing a chance
As he couldn't survive the mine attack.
I remember the sudden change
Not coming as strange
Or even bizarre,
We all had to adapt
(Though heavens, not my dopey cat)
I remember seeing explosions lighting up the horizon
No sound, away so far.
I remember the devastation
I getting wound up with anticipation,
My mother kept saying
It was all an abomination...
Then the joys,
The jubilation,
As four years later the war ended
And such was cause
For celebration,
But looking back
Nothing in my life has come close
To the feeling of fear
That was the war,
The horror
That I saw...

But that was years ago,
Jewel my dear,
You, on the other hand,
Have nothing to fear,
For did you know
We haven't had another war
For at least 6 decades
Or more,
So dry your eyes pet,
Else your face will get wet,
Then you'd catch a chill, I bet,
Run along home
To your mum and dad,
Don't worry about me dear
And remember, be happy
Not sad.

Oh Gran,
If only you knew,
The things that have happened
Over the past year or two,
I listen
But me you can't hear,
I suppose it's some consolation
That you're still near,
Anyway,
Bye gran,
I'd better go before my nose turns blue,
But not before
I've placed these flowers on your grave
For you,
To keep you company
A reminder of me,
Later Gran,
I'll see you tomorrow
Maybe.

lovely story

Jewel, I enjoyed the whole thing from beginning to end. Wonderful heartfelt twist at the end. Read like a short story. raskin
