The Body

*This poem is part of a true story. This is what I looked like the night my best and closest friend left to go to boot camp. That story and this poems counter part is a poem titled: "A Young Man". They are meant to be read together, so you can get both sides of the story. ENJOY!*

The body collapses upon its self
Contracting into a ball

The head lies upon the hat
Catching the steady stream of tears

The face hot and wet to touch
Redness fills the once pale face

The eyes puffy and bloodshot
Still filled with pools of water

The nose congested and inflamed
While mucus runs down the side of her face

The lips separated revealing the tongue
And are striped with water from the falls above

The chin squished into a bundle
Shaking uncontrollably

The neck cold and covered with goose-bumps
Looking lifeless and pale

The chest protrudes upward then falls quickly
Between the fast shallow breaths being gasped

The abdomen slowly rising and falling
Quivers with the sniffles

The arms wrapped around the body
Scared to leave the body’s warmth

The hands palm down
Shake involuntarily

The hips stay life less in one position
Not moving from their place

The legs curl into each other
And intertwine

The feet tapping up and down
Keeping a rapid rhythm

The mind shuts down slowly
As the light around is extinguished

The heart throbs on in the midst
Of pain and hurt
