The Voices
In the cold dark white night,
With everlasting cold stars
With a lukewarm still wind
With thundering silence
There are many voices,
Some loud, some soft,
Some demanding, some pleading,
Some harsh, some soothing,
Some proud, some afraid,
Some you know, some you don’t
Voices with the best intentions in mind
Trying to lead you down a path that only you know
Offering shortcuts
Showing you wondrous things off the path
Whispering fantasies
Distracting you from where you’re headed
Voices reaching out
Demanding things you can’t do
Offering things you shouldn’t take
Whispering things you don’t want to know
Shouting things you don’t need to know
Telling you things that are all wrong
Then there are the voices you can’t hear
Until you take the time to listen
The ones that are telling you
Listen to what’s inside you
Telling you to do what you think is right
Supporting you silently the whole way
With warm smiles and nods
They offer advice when you need it
Guiding you when you get lost
Voices that cry when you’re upset
They rejoice when you’re happy
Voices that also have the best intentions
Who can you hear?
Who will you listen to?
Which path do you risk?
The voices are confusing
But there is only one you should listen to
The one hardest to hear, hardest to understand, hardest to know.
