Hero’s of the Titanic

I played those ragtime tunes
as if my song would somehow lessen the fear reflected in their eyes.
Being caught somewhere between hope and denial
we all wanted that unforeseen impossible
I choked on the air. It was as thick as English pudding.
Thick with the worried thoughts of those privileged passengers.
Thick, with our spirits and the smell of death.
Still, all my song shall be
I had to play it, to breathe.
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
I watched the women squeeze so tightly to their young while mournfully
they pulled away from their husbands.
I’ll never forget that look.
I played on, as my spirit hovered even nearer
I used my violin. Its what I could do.
The others took my lead on that boat deck as we desperately searched
to play the song that would save us all.
Men went limp, as if
the notes were lulling them asleep.
Some families clung together in prayer and others fought
to find something to hang onto.
We knew that God had called our names and that making music
giving solace, is what were there to do.
So we played.

Music to my ears...

This poem was music to my ears... and soul!

I have thought of fallen heros before...

I have thought of fallen heros before... The unselfish giving of their lives to save others or just to enhance others lives... I wanted to write something about them... There are so many people that have done so much to help the rest of society... What the heros of the Titanic did was amazing... But for the band to keep playing under the elements in the face of doom has to amongst the top of all heros. It was as if they were playing at their own funeral. It is not sad to me... It was a beautiful thing that they did! I love the fact that you thought about their heroics and wrote about it! You help to keep their spirit living on... in a unique and wonderful way! It was a joy to read this... Thank you for sharing it!

Titanic

I went on a cruise a few years back and thought a lot about the Titanic. What a scene that must have been when it went down... Good poem, Geo.
