Academic Freedom

Assign unto night all things of darkness
and unto the day all that is true light,
but in-between there exists shades of gray-
always it is twilight or dawn somewhere.

There is still what’s right and still what is wrong
but all need not be either black or white,
open debate oft times the way has freed-
to new ideas and to new frontiers crossed.

Divergence of thought now seems incorrect,
it’s no longer allowed by those that ought-
not to stifle the ideas that dare go-
beyond old paradigms and powers that be.

Those wielding the broom of education
are of whom I speak, that in the classroom
are the powers that be, sweeping away all
tests of the politically correct seas.

This is of the night and of the darkness,
and is not of the day or of true light.
Freedom to test academic dogma
with viable options must be the quest.
