Generation X Responds to Flanders Fields
Generations long have passed
Since you, the brave, have freedom clasped.
I know you hoped and prayed for us,
Sorry to say we are not worth the fuss.
Our memories have gone and gone fast
Of you in Flanders Fields.
Spoiled and foolish we are,
Sex and drugs, parties and bars,
Poisoned with evil thoughts and dreams.
If you listen, you can hear the screams
Of this freedom that is now so far,
Far now since Flanders Fields.
In schools we are not truly taught
Of brave days or why your fights were fought.
What great thing has America bought
For this blood of Flanders Fields?
And this torch you have passed, has fallen
at last, at the feet of flesh and cowardice.
I pray may God forgive us,
And all you in Flanders Fields.
(Response to "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae)
