More of Shylock's Wisdom
MORE OF SHYLOCK’S WISDOM
“If a Jew wrongs a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge! If a Christian wrongs a Jew, what should his suffering be by Christian example? Why revenge?
Shylock – THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
From the Genesis to now, man has been
Severed by faith and interpretations
Of sacred doctrine, timely teachings from
Sinners like us, the birds wounded in flight
By vile emotions – guilt, pity from sin
Committed against pure, forthright, christians;
Never defined but creatures of the lamb,
The same worshipped by all children of light.
Dan from the Exodus and John, son of
Zechariah as example. Let’s
Suppose that John did harm the Jew, injured
His body, defiled his soul, left him at
Death’s door. What then would be the Jews resolve?
“Life shall go for life …eye for eye”. The debt
Owed for injury must be paid to the injured.
And if the two exchanged their places at
This instant, can you then guess John’s action?
If his right cheek be defiled, would he not
Willingly give the other cheek to be
Tarnished? Here’s his model given through free will!
Farcical! A man of liberation
And a man of the Pentateuch sans thought,
Lacking modern foresight to find the key
To mankind’s great pre-eminence – free will.
Man of the repeated law, man of the
Gospels, one seemingly lacking free will,
Governed by the Torah never by his
Heart like the new man of the modern age -
The free man. Shylock saith, “Look! Find the
Humanity which has left humans, steal
It back, reclaim it from the word and these
Questions of revenge and pardon will age
And soon fade. Humanity, alas must
Not be ruined by disputes from revenge,
Arguments from pardons, battles from faith.
Hear me! Need I echo Shylock’s Wisdom?
