Sincere civility
“Good morning! May I hold the door for you?”
I looked into her pleasant youthful face
Smiled and thought to myself while walking through
The opened doorway with dignified grace.
What is it about me that she proffered
This deed? Could it be because of my age
Or just a kindly gesture she offers
Anyone? Perhaps my bequeathed peerage?
Hardly, but I must admit it’s refreshing
Instead of the usual parvenus:
Fawning, feigned, insincere social climbing
Hypocrites I encounter as a rule.
I turned and held the door and stood aside
Nodded and smiled again as she passed by.

A simple gesture
of kindness sometimes is just that. I really enjoyed this poem and came back to leave a comment of appreciation. Not everyone has ulterior motives. raskin
Subtle age discrimination?...I wonder!
Raskin, I have a longstanding gripe. I actually can not complain when it occurs because the deed is always considerate;but People are forever opening doors for me (like I’m not up to the task) I always think: If I were thirty years younger would the same people offer me the same deed? I conclude, probably not.
Thank you for your kind comment.
I would,
have and do. raskin
